Smallholder farmers are key food producers and provide more than 80 percent of the food supply in Africa. Biodiversity is key to smallholders who keep many climate-resilient varieties and breeds alive. Smallholders are facing big challenges such as land grabbing where foreign agricultural investors acquire massive piece of land and large agricultural projects like ProSavana in Mozambique or countries where land ownership is not in favor of women like Benin. At this side event, we have speakers from Mozambique, Benin, Burkina Faso, Uganda, Kenya and Cameroon to share with us their stories on their challenges of securing farmers’ rights and their experiences of the people centered development projects on food security.
